The Moment it Clicked: Monopods Matter for Moths (and other flying insects.)

It's August - and it's HOT in East Texas! So, for comfort's sake I only go out looking for insects to photograph in the very early mornings and very late evenings. On a recent late evening excursion, I discovered hummingbird moths swarming my moonflowers!

The moths - also known as hawk moths or sphinx moths - move so quickly that chasing them from flower to flower is hopeless. By the time I get focused on the flower, the moth has feasted and fled.

But, I discovered the moths keep returning to the same flowers over and over again so I just focused on a flower - and waited.

The problem was, I got really tired of standing statue still while holding the camera in place, so I gave up too quickly, lowered my camera to rest my arms, and missed several shots.

The next night - I was prepared! When I headed out to photograph the hummingbird moths, I took my trusty monopod along.

I was able to comfortably stake out a flower without tiring out my arms and I got some great images like this one.

And THAT is the Moment it Clicked: When you head out on a photography adventure, take your monopod along!

Amazon has some great, inexpensive monopods. And, if you purchase one from the preceding link, you get a great monopod, I get a small commission, and it doesn't cost you a penny more than it would if you didn't follow the link. Thats a win-win!

(By the way, some of these images are available for purchase as a print, a digital file, as a jigsaw puzzle and more!)
